African vs Filipino Virtual Assistants: An Honest Comparison for Business Owners

Both regions have excellent virtual assistants. The right choice depends on your time zone, the work you need done and how the VA is managed. Here's a fair look at each.

If you've started looking for a virtual assistant, you've probably noticed two names come up again and again: the Philippines and Africa.

A quick note before we start: Goldie VA is an Africa-based agency, so we're not neutral. But we believe you should choose with clear eyes, so this guide sticks to the facts that actually matter when you hire.

1. Time zones: the biggest practical difference

Time zone affects how quickly you get answers, whether you can talk live, and when work gets done.

  • The Philippines is on UTC+8 all year. That's 12 to 13 hours ahead of New York and 7 to 8 hours ahead of London. Many Filipino VAs are used to working night shifts so they're online during the US day.
  • West Africa (for example Nigeria) is on UTC+1, and East Africa (for example Kenya) on UTC+3. West Africa shares almost the same working day as the UK and the rest of Europe, and overlaps with the US morning, so many VAs can cover US hours without working through the night.

In short: if you're in the UK or Europe, an African VA can usually work your hours in real time. If you're in the US, both can work your day; it's worth asking how the schedule fits around the VA's own time zone.

2. English and communication

Both regions have strong English speakers. English is an official language in the Philippines, and in many African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, where it's used in school, business and government.

What matters more than the country is the individual: their writing, their phone manner and how clearly they report back. Always test with a short written task and a call before you hire.

3. Experience and industry

The Philippines has one of the world's most established outsourcing industries, built over decades. That means a large pool of VAs with call-centre, customer service and back-office experience.

Africa's remote-work talent pool is younger and growing fast, with many university-educated professionals moving into virtual assistance, admin, customer support and digital marketing. Strong training and good management make the biggest difference here, as they do everywhere.

4. Cost

Both regions cost far less than hiring locally in the US, UK, Canada or Europe. Rates vary more by experience and by how the VA is hired (freelancer or managed agency) than by country, so compare what's included, not just the hourly rate.

5. What matters more than the country

The most common reasons a VA arrangement fails have little to do with geography:

  • No clear onboarding or task list
  • No one checking the quality of the work
  • No backup when the VA is sick or leaves
  • No protection for your data

That's why many business owners choose a managed VA over a freelancer: someone who is vetted, trained, supervised, covered by an NDA and replaced if it isn't the right fit. (We compare the two in Freelancer vs. Managed VA.)

How to choose

  • You're in the UK or Europe and want real-time help: an African VA's working day lines up with yours.
  • You're in the US and want overnight work done while you sleep: a VA in Asia can be a good fit.
  • You're in the US and want a VA online during your morning: an African VA overlaps naturally with your working morning.
  • Whatever you choose: test before you commit, agree clear tasks, and make sure someone manages quality.

The best VA isn't defined by a country. It's the one who understands your business, communicates clearly and makes your week lighter.
